The future of closed shopping centers
he wave of closures of closed and abandoned shopping centers is a relatively recent phenomenon in Spain. In A Coruña, the first to fall was Dolce Vita, in January 2014, less than six years after its opening. In the United States, shopping malls and large multi-product outlets ( big box stores ) count for hundreds.
One of these large closed areas has gone around the world from being a Warmart to the largest public library in the country. It is located in McAllen, Texas, and has 12,000 square meters of space for books and other activities in 12,000 square meters.
The oldest mall in the United States still standing has also changed use. Raised in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1928, the Westminster Arcade has been converted into 48 microapartments of 20 to 45 square meters, with large waiting lists to be occupied. In Spain, many of the shopping centers have ended up in the hands of vulture funds. The future of Dolce Vita is not clear. Recently the insolvency liquidators of the promoter, Chamartín, have closed their sale without knowing more details.
